What is the emotion trying to tell you?
If we think of emotions as signals the body is transmitting, we have a golden opportunity to be still when emotions arise and observe.
For this month, we will consider the emotion of anger.
When anger arises, it can be interpreted as a warning fire in the body. If we consider the flames of anger to be instructive, we are immediately reminded to be still to understand the message.
During an instance where this fire is felt in the body, you may try taking a moment to sit still and close your eyes.
Start by breathing in through your nose and simply recognize that you are breathing in. Then, breathe out through your mouth and recognize the air leaving your body. This simple process is like adding a cup of water to internal flames.
Feel the gentle calming sensation and how it allows you to sit with the emotion of anger more comfortably.
Now, with as much love as you can, ask the anger what it is trying to tell you.
Consider: What are the conditions that caused the anger to arise?
Has this emotion of anger arisen because of an unmet expectation?
If so, you may sit still a little longer to recognize that unmet expectation.
As you allow the anger to flow through the body, simply observe the unmet expectation and give yourself the love you wanted to feel in that situation.
Continue breathing in love as the flames cool until you feel ready to open your eyes.
Now that you have transformed your anger with concentration and love, you have gained understanding from the emotion.
When you have returned to an internal calm–think of yourself as an ocean of still water, the next right action will appear on its own.
You may consider calmly taking this action, or non-action, with gratitude for the lesson the emotion has given you.
